TED Talk: Tales of Creativity and Play

After watching the TED Talk in class, I realized that the growing up has changed me into a person that is afraid of many things. Failure, embarrassment, standing out and judgement... I realized these were the things that were stopping me from being creative. These were stopping my ideas from branching out into bigger things. Unlike kids, who did whatever they wanted, I had to do things that society deemed appropriate. That also means not doing anything groundbreaking or extraordinary.

Also, with our advancement in technology, we have forgotten how enjoyable simple things are. Simple things like playing with the boxes of our toys can be more fun than playing with the toys itself because with the box, you have unlimited possibilities. However, on the other hand, a toy will just be a toy. No matter how interactive or cute it might be, the potential of it has been limited by the toy designer, or manufacturer.

I also learnt that it is okay to not know the outcome of a project. It is alright to just play around with the materials over and over again, even if you have no idea what you are doing. The outcome will come naturally.

Therefore, I have learnt that through play, we can encourage creativity. We need to stop setting boundaries and social norms. People should be allowed to do fun stuff and break the rules without being ashamed of it.
